On 18 June 2026, an interview on legal aid for matrimonial matters, given by Assistant Principal Legal Aid Counsel (Civil Litigation), Mr Ted Lee, and Legal Aid Counsel (Civil Litigation), Ms Tammy Hui, was broadcasted on the TVB programme “Big City Shop”.

Under the strategic framework of the National 15th Five-Year Plan - underpinned by the dual objectives of accelerating foreign-related rule of law and deepening the “AI+ Action” initiative, from 3 to 6 June 2026, Director of Legal Aid, Mr C.M. Chan, led a seven-member delegation composed of representatives from the three divisions of the Department to Singapore for a duty visit. During which, the Delegation visited Singapore’s Judiciary (including the Supreme Court and the State Courts), the Legal Aid Bureau and the Public Defender’s Office under the Ministry of Law, The Law Society of Singapore, Pro Bono SG, and two local law firms, namely TSMP Law Corporation and TL Yap Law Chambers LLC. The Delegation met with their representatives and had in-depth exchanges to understand how Singapore’s judiciary and government agencies, pro bono legal service providers, and the legal profession leverage information technology and artificial intelligence to improve legal aid services and boost efficiency when providing publicly funded legal aid and pro bono legal services, such as utilising remote video systems to enhance contact with applicants and legally-aided persons, and achieving a paperless office through information systems. The Legal Aid Department expresses its sincere gratitude to the Singapore judiciary, government agencies, the Law Society, and law firms that hosted the Delegation during the visit.

On 3 June 2026, Senior Legal Aid Counsel (Civil Litigation), Ms Joyce Leung and Senior Law Clerk I (Kowloon Branch Office), Miss Anna Lau delivered a talk for social security officers/assistants and frontline staff of the Social Welfare Department on matrimonial matters and on the work and services of the Department.

On 7 and 8 May 2026, Mr C.M. Chan, Director of Legal Aid, led a delegation of 5 directorate officers, 14 Senior Legal Aid Counsel and 20 Legal Aid Counsel to Shenzhen to participate in the “National Studies Programme of Legal Aid Department”. This programme aims to enhance participants’ understanding of the construction of rule of law and legal aid system at the national level, while drawing on Shenzhen’s experience in utilising artificial intelligence to boost work efficiency, thereby contributing to the development of the rule of law nationwide.

On 24 April 2026, Assistant Principal Legal Aid Counsel (Civil Litigation), Mr Ted Lee, and Senior Legal Aid Counsel (Crime), Miss Frizia Chik, received a delegation of judges and judicial officers from the Chinese Mainland and introduced to them the work and services of the Legal Aid Department. On 15 April 2026, the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims (ARIAV) organised an exhibition on home renovation and repair safety to strengthen public safety awareness regarding minor works. Director of Legal Aid, Mr C.M. Chan, attended the opening ceremony and stated in his speech that the Legal Aid Department handles numerous personal injury compensation claims each year, and upholds justice by assisting those in need in defending their rightful claims and recovering compensation. Acting Deputy Director of Legal Aid (Application & Processing), Ms Nancy Keung, and Assistant Principal Legal Aid Counsel (Application & Processing), Ms Jenny Leung, also attended the ceremony and took a photo with the Chief Executive of ARIAV, Ms Fay Siu.

On 27 March 2026, Legal Aid Counsel (Application & Processing), Ms Emily Cheung, briefed a group of secondary school students on the work and services of the Department, and shared with them career-related information. Students also attended court case hearings at the High Court for a first-hand experience of court proceedings.

On 18 March 2026, Legal Aid Counsel (Kowloon Branch Office), Mr Jet Luk, hosted a talk for the frontline staff and volunteers of Po Leung Kuk Tsui Lam Centre on matrimonial litigation matters including divorce, maintenance, child custody and mediation, and the legal aid services provided by the Department.

On 10 March 2026, representatives from the Malaysian Legal Aid Department visited our Department. The delegation was received by the Deputy Director of Legal Aid (Litigation), Mr Ben Li; and Assistant Principal Legal Aid Counsel (Civil Litigation), Mr Ted Lee and Miss Ada Wong. Both parties exchanged views on legal aid and the delegation was introduced about mediation services supported by the Department. Director of Legal Aid, Mr C.M. On 5 March 2026, Director of Legal Aid, Mr C.M. Chan, Acting Deputy Director (Application & Processing), Ms Nancy Keung, and Legal Aid Counsel (Application & Processing), Mr Nic Chong, received representatives of the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims, and had discussions and exchanges with its Chief Executive, Ms Fay Siu, and her colleagues on issues of mutual concern, particularly regarding legal aid matters for the foreign domestic helpers who passed away in the Tai Po fire incident.

On 13 February 2026, the Legal Aid Department set up service counters at various transitional housing estates where residents of Wang Fuk Court are residing to provide “face-to-face” legal aid consultation services for them. On 10 February 2026, Legal Aid Counsel (Application & Processing), Mr Nic Chong, gave a talk on the work and services of the Department in an event organised by the International Social Service Hong Kong Branch, and provided information on application procedures, requirements and eligibility for legal aid to an audience of newly arrived ethnic minorities.

On 6 February 2026, Senior Legal Aid Counsel (Crime), Miss Anna Tsang, upon the invitation from the Hong Kong Bar Association, received a delegation of visiting Mainland lawyers and introduced the work and services of the Department.

On 5 February 2026, the Legal Aid Department held a media tea gathering, with over a dozen editors or representatives from television, radio, newspapers, and online media in attendance. Director of Legal Aid, Mr C.M. Chan; Deputy Director (Policy & Administration), Ms Juliana Chan; Deputy Director (Litigation), Mr Ben Li; and Acting Deputy Director (Application & Processing), Ms Nancy Keung, introduced the department's key work priorities and future outlook, and answered various questions from the media regarding legal aid services.

From 30 January to 13 February 2026, the Legal Aid Department set up service counters at seven sites of transitional housing estates where residents of Wang Fuk Court are residing to provide “face-to-face” legal aid consultation services for them and other affected persons. On 30 and 31 January, Legal Aid Counsel, Mr Nic Chong, reviewed materials in detail in preparation for meetings with the residents (at Kai Fook Kui in Kai Tak); Senior Legal Aid Counsel, Mr Paul Yau, attentively listened to residents’ concerns (at Eminence Tower I in Hung Shui Kiu); and Legal Aid Counsel, Mr James Chan, answered residents’ enquiries (at Lok Sin Village in Tai Po).

On 28 January 2026, the Law Society of Hong Kong hosted a working lunch for the directorates of the Department, in which both parties exchanged views on matters of common interest or concern. Director of Legal Aid, Mr C.M. Chan, also took the opportunity to express gratitude to the Law Society for helping with the set up of seven on-site legal aid enquiry counters to support residents affected by the Wang Fuk Court fire in Tai Po.

On 19 January 2026, Director of Legal Aid, Mr C.M. Chan; Deputy Director (Policy & Administration), Ms Juliana Chan; Deputy Director (Litigation), Mr Ben Li; and Acting Assistant Director (Litigation), Mr Simon Lau, attended the Ceremonial Opening of Legal Year 2026. They took the opportunity to meet with local and international legal practitioners, and exchanged views about legal aid system in Hong Kong. Director of Legal Aid, Mr C.M. On 18 January 2026, Director of Legal Aid, Mr C.M. Chan, attended the half marathon gun start ceremony of the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2026, and together with other ceremony guests, raised their arms cheering to encourage the runners.

On 17 January 2026, Director of Legal Aid, Mr C.M. Chan, together with the Legal Aid Department Volunteer Team made up of colleagues, assisted runners with registration and crowd management at the Kai Tak Arena for the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2026. On 16 January 2026, Director of Legal Aid, Mr C.M. Chan, and Assistant Director of Legal Aid (Application & Processing), Mr Jason Chan attended the Annual Reception 2026 of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers and exchanged views with stakeholders from various sectors on legal aid matters.
