A total of 45 secondary school students under the CLAP for Youth @JC programme visited the Legal Aid Department on 28 March and 4 April 2018 respectively to understand the work and services of the Department and daily work of Legal Aid Counsel and Law Clerks. Comprising a court hearing and a sharing session with staff of the two departmental grades, the project was funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

On 29 March 2018, Legal Aid Counsel / Information and Application Services Unit, Ms Katrina Ng (left) and Acting Senior Law Clerk I / Kowloon Branch Office, Mr Philip Leung (right) delivered a talk to 120 social workers and frontline staff from the Social Welfare Department and other non-governmental organisations on the work and services of Legal Aid Department relating to family issues including divorce, maintenance and notes on referring recipients of Comprehensive Social Security Assistance to apply for legal aid.
Director of Legal Aid, Mr Thomas Kwong (second left) and Deputy Director of Legal Aid / Administration, Mr Chris Chong (first left) met with Mr Lu Weidong (third left), Director of Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Justice to introduce the legal aid services in Hong Kong on 21 March 2018. Mr Lu also met with officials of other departments and legal professionals during his stay in Hong Kong. The visit was organised by the Information Services Department.
Legal Aid Department was awarded “Outstanding Mentorship Alliance 2016/17 and 2017/18” by both Education Bureau and the Caritas Youth & Community Service in recognition of LAD’s commitment in organising career talks for non-Chinese speaking students. Acting Senior Legal Aid Counsel / Kowloon Branch Office, Miss Eliza Ching (right) and Legal Aid Counsel / Official Solicitor’s Office, Miss Ella Chan (left) introduced the work and services of the Legal Aid Department to a group of law students and teachers from the Zhejiang University of Technology on 1 February 2018.
Senior Legal Aid Counsel / Crime, Ms Sally Cheung (left) delivered a talk on legal aid services in Hong Kong to a group of law students from the China University of Political Science and Law on 31 January 2018.
On 27 January 2018, Acting Senior Legal Aid Counsel / Application and Processing, Mr Ivan Yim (centre), Legal Aid Counsel / Application and Processing, Mr Jet Luk (right) and Senior Law Clerk I / Information and Application Services Unit, Mr John Chu (left) hosted a talk for over 130 participants and introduced legal aid services relating to employees’ compensation and personal injuries at work. The talk was organised by the Federation of Hong Kong and Kowloon Labour Unions.
On 19 January 2018, Director of Legal Aid, Mr Thomas Kwong (fourth left), together with Deputy Director of Legal Aid / Administration, Mr Chris Chong (second left), Deputy Director of Legal Aid / Litigation, Ms Juliana OY Chan (first left), and Acting Deputy Director of Legal Aid / Application and Processing, Ms YW Mo (third left) met with Dr Wang Zhen Min (fifth left), Director-General of Department of Law of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in HKSAR to exchange views on the provision of legal aid services in Hong Kong.
On 15 January 2018, the Director of Legal Aid, Mr Thomas Kwong (fifth left) and two Deputy Directors of Legal Aid Department met with Ms Holly Kwan, Consul (Consulate General of Canada) (fourth left), Mr Joshua Strehle, Consular & Passports Manager (Australian Consulate-General) (sixth left), Ms Jannie Kam, British Pro-Consul (British Consulate-General) (seventh left) and Mr James J. Jay Junior, Consul (U.S. Consulate General) (first right) to exchange views on the provision and latest development of legal aid services in Hong Kong. The visit was organised by Consulate General of Canada.
On 11 January 2018, Acting Senior Legal Aid Counsel / Kowloon Branch Office, Ms Joyce Leung hosted a talk for over 30 social workers and frontline staff of Po Leung Kuk Tsui Lam Centre and introduced the work and services of the Legal Aid Department relating to family issues including divorce, maintenance, child custody and guardianship of minor. Information pamphlets on legal aid services were also distributed before the sharing session.
