On 22 and 23 September 2017, a total of 13 Professional Officers of the Department participated in the “Free Legal Advice Programme” , which is part of a series of events under Law Week 2017 organised by the Law Society of Hong Kong. The Professional Officers took turn to provide advice on issues relating to legal aid services at the Department’s booth on both days.

Acting Senior Legal Aid Counsel / Kowloon Branch Office, Miss Eliza Ching (fifth right in the front row) and Legal Aid Counsel / Civil Litigation (1), Ms Michelle Lee (fourth right in the front row) introduced the work and services of the department to a group of Mainland officials from Shinjang Uyghur Aptonom Rayoni on 27 July 2017. The visit was organised by Hong Kong Financial Services Institute.
On 17 July 2017, a group of law students from the Peking University, who had participated in a scholarship programme organised by the Hong Kong Bar Association, visited the Legal Aid Department. Legal Aid Counsel / Crime, Ms Charis Li (fourth left in the front row) briefed them on the legal aid system and independence of justice in Hong Kong.
Legal Aid Counsel / Crime, Mr David Chow (fifth right in the front row) and Legal Aid Counsel / Legal and Management Support, Miss Frizia Chik (fourth right in the front row) introduced Hong Kong’s legal aid system to a group of Mainland students and teachers from South China University of Technology, China on 12 July 2017. The visit was organised by the City University of Hong Kong.
Senior Legal Aid Counsel / Application and Processing, Mr Simon Lau and Legal Aid Counsel / Legal and Management Support, Miss Melody Chui introduced the work and services of Legal Aid Department to a group of Mainland officials from Anhui Province on 6 July 2017. Senior Legal Aid Counsel / Application and Processing, Mr Ivan Yim (fourth right in the back row) and Legal Aid Counsel / Application and Processing, Miss Michelle Yip (fourth right in the front row) introduced Hong Kong’s legal aid system to a group of Mainland officials from the Common Law Training Scheme 2016/2017 of the Department of Justice on 13 June 2017.
On 6 June 2017, Senior Legal Aid Counsel / Civil Litigation (2), Ms Janet Fung introduced to over 200 social workers and frontline staff of the Social Welfare Department as well as other non-governmental organisations the work and services of the Legal Aid Department relating to family issues including divorce, maintenance, child custody and guardianship of minor. A video introducing the Department’s services was shown and information pamphlets on legal aid services were also distributed before the sharing session.
Two groups of secondary school students under the CLAP for Youth @JC visited the Department on April 10 and 21, 2017 respectively. The purpose of the visit is to understand the function of the Legal Aid Department and the daily work of Legal Aid Counsel and Law Clerks. Comprising a court hearing and a sharing session with staff of the two departmental grades, the project was funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and co-organised by The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Baptist University. Senior Legal Aid Counsel / Kowloon Branch Office, Mr Jason Chan (standing) introduced the role and operation of the Legal Aid Department and the daily work of Legal Aid Counsel to members of Law Association of The Hong Kong University Students’ Union on 10 April, 2017. Titled “Paving Your Future Career Path”, the talk was organised by Law Association of The Hong Kong University Students’ Union and conducted at Centennial Campus of The University of Hong Kong.

The visit was organised by HK Wen Wei Management College.
The Secretary for Civil Service, Mr Clement Cheung visited the Legal Aid Department on 23 February 2017 to learn more about the work of the Department and to take the opportunity to meet its staff. Mr Cheung started his visit by meeting the Director of Legal Aid, Mr Thomas Kwong, and other directorate officers of the Department. He then toured the Legal and Management Support Section under the Policy and Administration Division and subsequently visited the Application and Processing Division to better understand how its staff process civil legal aid applications on the basis of prescribed means and merits tests. Later, he toured the Crime Section of the Litigation Division and was briefed on the processing of criminal legal aid applications and handling of criminal litigation at all court levels. He also noted the Section launched the Remote Official Visit System in May last year, which allows staff to interview inmates at the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre who apply for criminal legal aid through a video conferencing in the office. Mr Cheung also met with staff representatives of various grades at a tea gathering to exchange views on issues of concern before concluding his visit.
